The Pre-Masters Programme will equip you with the advanced skills you need to complete your postgraduate study at Edinburgh Napier University. The modules taken over one or two terms, provide you with a deeper understanding in healthcare, management and an introduction to research methods, arming you with the knowledge, skills and practical experience you need for this ever-changing and diverse industry.

What you will study

Alongside core modules, you will study subject-specific modules that will equip you with a foundation of knowledge for your chosen field of study.

Course Modules

The module focuses on the aims, scope and nature of communication within a professional context. It aims to introduce and develop communication skills directly relevant to the workplace and, in particular, to interactions in the setting of healthcare. While maintaining this focus, the module also strengthens and develops English language skills relevant to the study of healthcare in an international context and through academic investigation. You explore and interpret relevant source materials and use these and other learning materials to enhance their understanding of how work in healthcare and in its management proceeds in practice and, in particular, how good and poor communications along with cultural differences and varying perceptions can influence the effectiveness of the managerial function and processes in practice.

The module aims to introduce you to the definitions and development of the HRM function and provides and overview of the range of areas in which it can make a contribution to the management of an organisation. The module has three main areas of focus; the first surrounds exploring the HRM function in organisations whilst looking at the different stakeholder perceptions and how the function affects them. Secondly it examines the employee recruitment and selection processes and the practical application of these practices; finally the module evaluates employee training and development strategies by considering the many different options and exploring the process through which organisations make these choices in practice.

This module looks at issues around public health within a global context and has a focus on how organisations and agencies monitor and combat risks to health from a variety of causes such as infectious and non-infectious diseases, threats to food security, to the environment through, for example, climate change, and to the health of a population through lifestyle choices.

It also introduces you to epidemiology and the study of the distribution and pattern of the incidence of diseases within a population, considers epidemics/pandemics and when a disease becomes endemic within a population. It considers how health risks are identified, how an evidence-based approach enables effective identification of causation, patterns of transmission and enables clinical trials for treatments, including vaccines to combat global health threats.

This module introduces you to the following topic areas, which you will explore in the context healthcare management: leadership and managerial styles; assessment and mitigation of risk and the pursuit of improvement through change management. You explore partnership and team working, and critique effective leadership in contemporary healthcare practice. You further consider those leadership qualities that are most effective in supporting change within the complexity of healthcare settings, and explore theoretical aspects of leadership in the context of practice within healthcare. Reflective skills will be explored, and these skills will be used to explore the impact of leadership and change management in context.

This module provides you with the opportunity to learn about the different types of evidence that may be used to inform and support decision-making in various contexts, including healthcare. In particular, you explore different approaches to undertaking the research process and various research methods; you have the opportunity to develop your skills to critique research and its relevance to practice in context. You learn how to interpret statistical analyses and undertake qualitative data analysis. You reflect on the ethical and professional implications of research and consider factors which promote or hinder the implementation of evidence to practice. After completion of this module you will have the knowledge and skills to be able to understand the research process, appraise evidence and evaluate its appropriateness for implementation in context.
