Overview

The Pre-Masters is offered over one or two terms and focuses on equipping you with the academic English language skills you need to complete your postgraduate study at the University of Bradford.

It is designed for students who do not qualify for direct entry to the masters programmes at the university, this could be because of the grades achieved in your bachelor degree; your current qualifications are not equivalent to a UK bachelor degree or because you have a different background.

After successfully completing the IIM you will continue onto your chosen postgraduate degree course at the University of Bradford.

What you will study

Alongside core modules, you will study subject-specific modules that will equip you with a foundation of knowledge for your chosen field of study.

Subject Specific Modules

This module aims to strengthen and extend students’ mathematical skills, to enable students to appreciate the use of mathematics as an engineering tool and to build up a student’s level of competence in applying mathematical methods to solve engineering problems.

The module provides extended opportunities for students to demonstrate and develop their practical and laboratory skills. The module serves as a refresher for those with laboratory experience, but also provides the opportunity to learn about the requirements of safe working in the laboratory environment for those whose experience is limited.

For all, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of practical work in testing theoretical aspects of studies and to refresh the students’ understanding of the regulations and conventions governing practical work in a laboratory or workshop setting. Students will also practise or acquire some basic laboratory techniques as they develop and enhance more fundamental practical skills.

The objective of this module is to provide students preparing for an engineering Master’s degree with insight and understanding into the approach and philosophy of mechatronics. Furthermore, the module will demonstrate the essential features of mechatronics and its application in realising innovative modern engineering design.

The role of mechatronics and its relevance to modern engineering will feature in terms of product design, machine design, and process design.

This research-engaged and cross-disciplinary module introduces students to a range of contemporary issues, technological advancements and other ‘disruptive’ factors which have the potential to impact multiple fields of study, sections of society and areas of industry. Students will be supported to research a current issue or innovation from different viewpoints and to critically examine the real or potential impact on practice in their intended (or related) field of postgraduate study.

The module also aims to foster original and entrepreneurial thinking among students by supporting them to consider how practice in their intended field of study could be enhanced through the innovations discussed and/or how the impact caused by a particular issue could be minimised

This module aims to develop a greater understanding of some of the key activities and functions associated with establishing and managing a business. The specific aims are to review the legal bases of different types of business, to consider the nature and impact of different styles of management/leadership, and to introduce students to the fields of operations management and organisational behaviour, including a detailed understanding of key developments within the area and to consider how change is introduced and managed within businesses

The module provides students with an opportunity to explore institutional theory and supports them in analysing and critiqueing the role of ‘social institutions’ in theoretical and real-world/applied domains.

Continuation degrees

This study route offers you a pathway to the following degree courses:

MSc (Hons)
Satellite Systems Engineering

Supporting students to success

Learn more about what our students have to say when studying across our education network.

As DMUIC is situated in England’s most vibrant and multicultural city, I had the opportunity to make friends from different countries. The most amazing thing was that the DMUIC staff including all teachers and the office persons were very motivational and welcoming. They provide the best routes for study to every individual.”

Syed Asim Pakistan , De Montfort University International College (DMUIC)

I’ve enjoyed studying at DMUIC, the tutors are excellent and have helped me settle into life as a university student. They are also really supportive and have helped myself and other students with other issues outside of the classroom such as accommodation.

Nafisa Bangladesh , De Montfort University International College (DMUIC)

I have successfully progressed onto my degree course at the University of Bradford because of UBIC's reliable policies and teaching programme. To the new students, those who just started their foundation at Bradford International College, I must say you are going to pass the class, the only thing required is your attention and leave the rest on UBIC's staff because they are the one that are going to lead you to a brilliant future as it is a pathway to success.

Shoaib Pakistan , University of Bradford International College

I have a lot of international friends here at BUIC, and I’ve learnt so much from them. There is always a lot to do together both on and off-campus.

Sagar Nepal , Bangor University International College (BUIC)

I would recommend UGIC because it is based on the main University of Greenwich campus, a cosmopolitan university. At UGIC, there are students from all around the world, and I've made a lot of friends from exciting places."

Gozel Turkmenistan , University of Greenwich International College

I think one of the main reasons the IIM (pre-masters) has been so helpful is because the staff are so supportive and are always able to help me. Whether it is understanding a module or finding out how to sort accommodation, they will help you with everything. I’ve enjoyed studying at Bangor, the people are friendly, and the environment is also really peaceful and safe. It’s given me the best opportunity to succeed in my studies here in the UK.
