International Year One - Computing

Overview

The International Year 1 (IY1), delivered at University of Bradford International College (UBIC) provides an intensive combination of first year university subject’s modules with extra study and English language skills.

The IY1 is the equivalent to your first year of study at undergraduate level, upon successful completion, you will continue to the second year of your chosen degree at the University of Bradford.

To join this course you will need to have successfully completed high school or equivalent and meet the English language requirements. We offer Pre-sessional English which is a 6 or 12-week extension course for those who may not yet meet the required English language standards for direct entry to our pathways:

  • Direct Entry – IELTS 5.5 (with no skill below 5.5)
  • If you have an IELTS of 5.0 (with no component below 4.5), you will be offered a6 week Pre-sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the IYZ.
  • If you have an IELTS of 4.5 (with no component below 4.0), you will be offered a12 week Pre-Sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the IYZ.

What you will study

Alongside core modules, you will study subject-specific modules that will equip you with a foundation of knowledge for your chosen field of study.

Core Modules

This module provides the students with sound knowledge and command of mathematics with emphasis on engineering applications. It also provides students with a grounding in computational thinking and mathematical structures underpinning programming and data structures.

The module contains the well-recognised elements of classical engineering mathematics which universally underpin the formation of the professional engineer. The principal aim of this module is to bring students up to a common standard in mathematics in order to facilitate their entry into second year studies.

This module provides students with a theoretical and practical introduction to Software Engineering. And enables students to learn about the methodologies and approaches adopted in software development.

This module introduces development in a wider context by introducing issues around sustainability, legal frameworks and ethical considerations.

This module introduces students to the concept of programming and programming languages and related skills which allow a computing professional to develop and maintain appropriate, robust and secure information systems in the workplace.

This module also introduces students to the notion of coding and the adaptation of programmes to the particular requirements of organisations or businesses.

This module introduces students to the structure and components of a computer system and the key components and responsibilities of an operating system. By providing them with an understanding of how their computer and its operating systems work it will provide them with a good grounding for the further years of their degree studies.

The module introduces students to structures, key concepts and standards of the World Wide Web. It provides practical experience and theoretical understanding of the tools, techniques and technologies which are deployed to develop the content, presentation and interactive features of basic websites and web applications. Students learn how to build, test and de-bug web pages using a web browser, and ensure that these conform to recognised industry-wide standards.

The module will also develop students’ research skills by encouraging them to explore the theoretical concepts in the real-life context of firms and organisations which depend on well-designed and managed internet technologies.
