Combining your English and philosophy studies gives you a very wide range of modules to choose from.

You can study the history of English literature from the medieval period right up to the present day.

You have the option of studying anything from Shakespeare to science fiction, Romantic poetry to contemporary poetry, creative writing to visual culture, or Victorian novels to Hollywood films.

We start by covering topics such as how to analyse a poem and how to read a novel as a literary critic, moving on to historical surveys of literature. We then explore in more detail many of the periods, movements and topics previously covered.

Philosophy explores our existence using critical thinking and argument. We specialise in continental (European) philosophy and teach key texts from the European tradition.

We help you look at how philosophy is important to real-world concerns and contemporary issues by:

exploring films and artwork
discussing important scientific and technological developments
debating controversial ethical issues
looking at how texts written three hundred years ago can be relevant to political situations today

If you do not meet our academic grade requirements for your chosen course, we can offer you an alternative route to begin your studies. Our international incorporated degrees will develop your subject knowledge, academic English and university level study skills.

English and philosophy are adaptable subjects which open up a flexible range of career options. A wide-ranging knowledge of the arts, literature, philosophical thinking, and culture produces well-rounded individuals with a broad frame of reference.

A philosophy degree provides you with wide-ranging skills which are an advantage in any professional career. You will be able to identify and explain the underlying issues in all kinds of debates.

You will also learn to identify arguments from varied sources and traditions and offer clear responses to these arguments. You can summarise points of view which are not your own and will learn the self-discipline required for independent research.

The IS1 is the first year of a four year International Incorporated Bachelors. And its designed to strengthen your English language abilities and introduce core concepts and knowledge required at university study level. Once you have successfully completed your studies you will continue the remaining stages of your degree directly with the University of your choice.

Fees are not inclusive of scholarships. All applications are subject to a non-refundable admin Fee of £220. Stated fees are for the pathway only. Stated fees do not include tuition applicable for degree course continued at the university, for more information on progression degree fees please visit the university website directly. After successfully completing International Stage One (3 terms) in Business (April 2026 intake), you will progress to IS2 in January 2027 and continue to your chosen degree at the University of Dundee in September 2027, entering Year 3. *MEd TESOL and MEd Education (Leading Learning and Teaching) not available for the January 2026 intake at the UoD.

Scholarships at Dundee

Students at the International College may be considered for a number of Scholarships that are part of the University of Dundee Scholarship offerings, such as the Global Citizenship Scholarship which awards students up to £5,000 per year of study. Another award is the ICD Progressing with Excellence Scholarship which recognises academic achievement while studying at the International College and awards up to £6,000 per year of study.

These scholarships are awarded for the University of Dundee period of study. Other Scholarships may be available for the ICD period of study, and you should contact your agent or Oxford International regional representative for full details of these.

Oxford International offers a number of scholarship opportunities for students applying for an academic course under the Core Scholarship. The scholarships are targeted at different regions around the world, awards range from partial contribution towards tuition fees to awards covering part or full pathway course fees at the international college.
