Molecular genetics is the study of genes at a molecular level, from their structure and function to how they pass on the information and make sure other processes in cells are regulated effectively.

The first two years of study will introduce concepts including genetics, cell biology, biological organisation, molecular mechanisms and processes. Students will develop practical laboratory and data analysis skills, and learn to design and run experiments. This will prepare students for carrying out projects later in their studies.

A degree in molecular genetics opens the door to many career options. Graduates are in great demand in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, food, biotechnology and healthcare industries, with openings for laboratory work or in the marketing, sales and management areas. Comparable openings can be found in the various agricultural, medical and veterinary research institutes, hospitals and the scientific Civil Service.
