Studying the English Language with TESOL degree at DMU will allow you to combine the study of English Language with the key theoretical and practical issues involved in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

A carefully designed course that enables you to develop your own ability to teach English to non-native speakers whilst enabling you to think about how language in general and English in particular functions in the world today. Through this course you’ll study linguistics, grammar, the evolution of the English language and a variety of writing styles, while also exploring the theory of how to teach English as a second language.

By studying with us you will develop a set of linguistic and analytical skills, which will help you become a highly-skilled communicator. In your final year you will have the opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge into practice with our work placement module.

Through this course you will be able to get get involved with a number of societies that are relevant to your studies, including creative writing and debate societies. There are also organised theatre trips and visiting lecturers have included author Kate Forsyth and poet Benjamin Zephaniah.

The International Year Zero is the first year of the four year undergraduate course. IYZ is designed to help you gain extra skills in your subject area, as well as English Language, before you continue to year one of your chosen University undergraduate degree course.

Following successful completion of the IYZ, you will continue onto Year One of your degree directly with the University of your choice.
